Suite101 e-Book A Taste of Winter
Introduction

Winter. The joy of many; the bane of others. Like any season, Winter holds a dichotomy of natural events that can evoke great beauty and great dread. In this collection of essays from The Science of the Sky, I look at but a few of many facets of the season we call Winter. Some such as “Snowrollers” describe unusual phenomena not often reported on the local weather news. Others such as “Snowflakes” describe the defining aspects of this season.

"The inhabitants of cities suppose that the country landscape is pleasant only half the year. I please myself with the graces of the winter scenery and believe that we are as much touched by it as by the genial influences of summer."

Ralph Waldo Emerson
